Balboa Park

Timeless Balboa Park is the nation’s largest urban cultural park. Comprised of 1,200 acres, Balboa Park is home to 15 world class museums, gardens, performing arts venues, and the world famous San Diego Zoo. The Park offers a rotating calendar of events, plays, exhibits, musicals, concerts and classes, as well as IMAX theater, shops, restaurants and walking trails.

Created originally in 1915 for the first World’s Fair 1915-1916 Panama-California Exposition, the park is a study in exotic Spanish-Renaissance architecture. The California Tower and dome, historic Cabrillo Bridge and Spreckels Organ Pavilion (one of the world’s largest outdoor pipe organs) are some of the permanent structures designed for the Fair which are still very much in use today. The Historic Botanical Building is one of the largest lath structures in the world, and it along with its adjacent Lily Pond, is one of the most photographed scenes in the Park.

The renowned San Diego Zoo was established in 1916. Today, the Zoo is home to more than 4,000 rare and endangered animals representing more than 800 species and subspecies. Conservation and education are primary goals of the Zoo, and the setting is one of natural habitats, lush green expanses, gardens, ponds, meandering trails, shopping and restaurants.
