Coastal Del Mar is first and foremost a study in understated elegance centered around a charming village by the sea…
The first grand hotel to welcome guests was the Casa del Mar in 1882. Soon after, it was accompanied by a natatorium, dancing pavilions, and a bathing pool extending from the beach out into the sea. And so began today’s coastal village of Del Mar. In 1936, the Del Mar Fairgrounds were developed to host the San Diego County Fair, followed shortly afterward by the famed Del Mar Racetrack. With celebrities coming in droves, Del Mar became a Hollywood hotspot and a destination beach city.
Beyond the updated Powerhouse, Fairgrounds & Racetrack, only a few buildings remain to remind us of the early days of Del Mar. One, the Stratford Square building, originally built in 1909 to house travelers on the railway, now houses shops, offices & eateries. Today, the famed L’Auberge Resort offers luxury lodgings and spa, just steps away from downtown and the charming Del Mar Plaza with it’s upscale boutiques and restaurants. With four terraced levels, the Plaza’s rooftop ‘penthouse’ level is a popular locals spot to relax and enjoy the sun as it sets over the Pacific Ocean.
