“This small beach sits somewhat apart from the north Strand, and is beside the San Luis Rey river mouth. Usually less populated due to limited parking & no facilities in the immediate area. That, and the river suffers from bacteria issues from storm runoff.” Sandbag C. Gull, bacteria expert
A sandbar that forms here makes it a popular surf spot. In the summer months surfing is limited, so observe posted area restrictions. The city is considering dedicating this little used stretch of beach to an off-leash dog area. However, there are strong opinions on both side of the fence. In general, splashing and swimming in the river-mouth is not recommended due to strong currents and occasional high bacteria levels. (Sandbag wasn’t kidding!)
